The central production of Necessary Angel’s 40th anniversary season is the Canadian Premiere of the legendary Caryl Churchill’s devastating work Escaped Alone.

At a series of garden gatherings, the intimate lives and histories of 4 women, longtime friends, are unearthed with dark humour and heartache.  A foreboding message from a mysterious outsider, laced with surreal images of an unfathomable future, seeps into the gathering, testing their love for life and each other.

Necessary Angel along with Soulpepper has assembled an all-female team - from playwright, director and actors, to stage management, crew and designers - to produce this extraordinary and prescient work.

Why Escaped Alone?

Escaped Alone is at the center of Necessary Angel’s work this year. At the threshold of 40 years, we have pivoted towards voices that have been buried, silenced or lost.

Messages from women, young people, and the desperate voice of the planet we inhabit – as each of these voices ring out, we are attempting to imagine that point where they emerge – often from within, as an elusive first signal, felt or imagined long before it is heard.

For us, Escaped Alone, is a prescient message embedded in the form of a play rather than ‘a play with a message’. This subtle differentiation is key to illuminating how we as a society become aware of our inner voices - sometimes the first elusive signals of impending disaster.

Voiced by four women over 70, Escaped Alone reveals a poetic and devastating image of our planet, that may be closer than we think.
